Kerala is the birthplace of Mohiniyattam, one of the eight Indian classical dance styles. This dance style, which has been known for its characteristic "lasya" mood, has gone through many phases, including royal patronage, decline, marginalization, and revival, which has led to its recognition as a classical dance form in India today. This paper attempts an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the dance form by exploring the mythological roots and historical developments of Mohiniyattam. In addition, the paper attempts to analyze the revival process through the Kerala Kalamandalam and the codification of the Kalamandalam style. Moreover, the paper attempts to analyze Abhinaya Sangeeta, with special reference to the symbiotic relationship between music and the art of expression. This study includes the musical development of Mohiniyattam from the ancient temple traditions of Kerala and its association with Carnatic music. The rare Mohiniyattam pieces based on the indigenous Kerala ragas, rarely performed today, have received particular attention. An overview of Mohiniyattam with reference to the larger context of cultural memory, performance, and intangible heritage helps us understand the relevance of the dance form and its role as a living archive of Kerala's artistic heritage.
