Abstract

The masculinity ideals are based on ‘Hegemonic Masculinity’, which stations itself at the top of gender order. For establishing such kind of masculine ideals and in order to dominate every individual belonging to any gender, men are seen exhibiting hypermasculine traits. The present study explores the manifestation of hypermasculinity in David Fincher’s movie, Fight Club (1999). It will study the characteristics exhibited by hypermasculine men in order to maintain their position at the top. Furthermore, the men with non- dominant masculinity vis-a-vis their socio-economic status behave in ways that decide their secondary position. It will analyse Fight Club through the lens of Masculine Studies, propounded by Raewyn Connell, wherein, several kinds of ‘masculinities’, ‘masculine behaviours’ and the changing gender trends are discussed.
